No spay/neuter services

With state-of-the-art medical suites, OC Animal Care refuses to provide spay or neuter services for the residents of the cities they serve.

No more TNR

The public is not allowed in ALL kennel buildings

No spay/neuter services

OC Animal Care stopped their TNR (Trap,Neuter,Return) program in March of 2020. Since then, the cat population has increased to an  unmanageable size.

THE SHELTER RESTRICTS PUBLIC ACCESS

The public is not allowed in ALL kennel buildings

The public is not allowed in ALL kennel buildings

OC Animal Care allows visitors to the kennel area for only 3 hours a day, to see only 60% of the adoptable dogs. That's less access than any other shelter in Southern California.

The public is not allowed in ALL kennel buildings

The public is not allowed in ALL kennel buildings

OC Animal Care does not allow the public into some kennels to avoid stressing the dogs. Doesn't keeping the dogs in the shelter longer without human interaction make their stress even worse?

Euthanizing Unnecessarily

Some Kittens are killed on the same day they arrive

Not Accepting Healthy cats or kittens

OC Animal Care is labeling dogs as “behavior” and euthanizing them without a strongly executed plan to help the dogs recover from their fear, stress, and anxiety.

OC Animal Care - RIP Euthanized shelter Dogs

Gone but never forgotten. These dogs were euthanized unnecessarily at OC Animal Care from January to August 2022

What Must change at OC Animal Care?

Demand OC Animal Care to allow people to look at all animals

Adoptions are by appointment only, for a specific animal that must first be selected from the OCAC website. Interactions between members of the public and animals are currently allowed only IF a potential adopter secures a supervised appointment.

Successful, permanent adoptions often occur through the spontaneous connections between people and animals and this selection process can only happen on-site with a true open-door walk-in policy.

Demand they stop misleading the public

OC Animal Care says on their PR and on their website that WALK-INS are WELCOME but what that actually means is that people are welcome to walk-in to make an appointment on a computer in the lobby, and to select a specific animal they want to see. They are not allowed to freely roam the campus as they had before 2020. Potential adopters should be allowed to walk around freely and take the time they need to find and connect with the right pet for them.

Demand they are transparent with their statistics

OC Animal Care is proud to report the save rate for 2021 was 94.81% for dogs - That does not mean the number of dogs adopted. The percentage of dogs actually adopted (some to the public some to rescue groups) was 37.8%. They also transferred 16.8% to other shelters and agencies.

Demand they provide spay & neuter services

Orange  County is one of the wealthiest counties in California, yet there is no county spay and neutering service being provided for the community. Most other counties and cities have such programs because they understand the importance of spay and neutering. Why doesn't Orange County offer that service? OC Animal Care services 14 cities within the county, which amounts to almost 2 million residents. Why is there no service being offered to spay and neuter for free or truly at a low cost?

Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), the humane approach to addressing community cat populations, works. It saves cats™ lives and is effective. TNR improves the lives of cats, addresses community concerns, reduces complaints about cats, and stops the breeding cycle.
